Bring Out the Genius in Your Child: The Young Scientists Club

I've always known my 5 year old had an interest in science, he loves to inspect things, ask questions, take things apart, TRY to put them back together, solve problems, etc. So, when I was introduced to The Young Scientists Club, I knew it was right up his alley. However, I didn't know it would bring out the genius in him! With 2 friends over for a playdate, I figured it would be fun to try out one of their many fantastic kits. Volcano Madness seemed like a good place to start. The directions are very clear, the supplies are all included (except the vinegar), and the instruction guide makes it easy for anyone to teach the concept at hand. The volcano kit is so thorough. It comes with a little pumice stone to represent the "volcanic" rock. The first part the the experiment asks "Do you think the stone will sink or float?" The three boys had split opinions, but my son said, "No mom it WILL float." So, we put it in the water and it sure did. So, I then asked the boys why they thought it was floating. The first answer, "It's gray." The second answer, "It has little holes in it." My son's answer, "Because the water is heavier than the rock." So, I look at the "teacher" guide and sure enough, he was right. Since he can't read, I know he didn't see the answer. I was stunned! When I asked him how he knew that, he said, "I just thought about it mom." WOW! Anyhow, the lesson ended with a bang, literally. The boys love to watch the lava erupt and learned some cool things along the way. The Volcano Madness kit is one of the eight Adventure Science Kits. True Learning: Keep Them Learning All Year Long

If you haven't heard of True Learning, you definitely need to familiarize yourself with this wonderful site. Again it's the teacher in me, but if you've got little ones ages 3-6, this site is really a must visit. True Learning is the first site of its kind. You purchase a one year subscription and then have access to over 3,000 educational worksheets and activities to complete. What I really love about the site are the fun graphics. My boys, ages 3 & 5 were very drawn to them. The activities are all progressional. Each of the 6 subjects (math, literacy, thinking, motor skills, art & world) have 4 levels of progression. All of the worksheets are colorful and have very inviting graphics. The site does require a lot of printing, however, I have found an excellent solution to this. Print the pages and put them in clear sheet protectors. Get some dry erase markers and put them in a binder. You can then use them over and over and make the most of your ink! True Learning also has a fun blog with great kids' activities. In addition to the blog, little ones can explore True Town and all of its adorable characters (no subscription is necessary for True Town or the blog). It is really amazing how in depth this site is. This is a wonderful summer activity to keep your little ones exercising the most important part of their body!

Mustela: Sun Protection for the Most Sensitive Skin

I have to say even before trying Mustela's sun protection line, I already love the company. After all, their 9 Months stretch mark lotion kept me stretch mark free during both of my pregnancies! There aren't enough words in the English Language to thank them for that... One of my favorite new finds is the fabulous Thumball by Answers in Motion. These soft squishy "soccer" type balls come in several great styles. The game is simple, throw it, catch it, look under your thumb, and react to it. As a former teacher, this is my kind of activity. I took it to a class of sixth graders and they had a blast with it. With only 50 days to go until my baby arrives, I have been feeling completely inflexible; stretching and exercising seem impossible when you're navigating around a giant belly. And I loved that I could do it at home. It's a useful addition to my prenatal physical therapy.

Shane's Wish

Shane Bernier is a courageous seven-year-old boy from Lancaster, Ontario who was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia when he was only five. On June 6th, 2006 Shane and his family received some unfortunate news: Shane experienced a relapse after completing 108 of 130 weeks of treatment.

However, despite the bad news, Shane has managed to keep a positive outlook on his situation and has made a heart-warming wish... He hasn’t asked for money or toys or anything of the sort. Instead, his birthday is on May 30th and he would like to break the world record for the most birthday cards ever received. His goal is 350 million cards. With every card, Shane’s courage grows. Something as simple as sending a birthday card could be enough to help Shane find peace and joy in his current circumstances.

Potty MD: Potty Problems Be Gone

Nolan See, Nolan Do, Nolan Pee, Nolan Poo....Well, it's done! My little guy is potty trained, no more diapers, I am thrilled. With the help of the fabulous site Potty MD, I was able to potty train my son without tears (of my own) in one week. You must check out the Potty Monkey, yes, that's right, I said Potty Monkey. The Potty Monkey is a must have potty training product. This terrific combination set comes with several helpful tools to use while potty training. Developed by a pediatric urologist, the Potty Monkey comes with his own little potty that makes a real flushing sound. The super soft stuffed monkey has in internal timer in which you can set to either 30 or 90 minutes. This way you can be consistent on getting your little one to the potty to "try." The monkey will talk when you place him on the potty and says phrases to your child, like "I need to go potty, let's go potty." I found that having my son help "potty train" the monkey in turn helped him be potty trained. However, the monkey and potty are not all that comes with the set. You also receive a wonderful book titled "The Potty Trainer" and a children's board book called "Monkey Learns to Potty." My son LOVES this book, it's very cute, hence the first line in this review... Monkey also comes with a diaper and "big monkey" underwear which was very helpful to show my son the importance of trading in his diapers for "big boy" undies.
